Chemistry

Course Type: A level

Chemistry A is a content-led approach where practical skills are integrated within the theoretical topics.

The specification encourages students to develop a detailed knowledge of chemical concepts in order to apply it to problem-solving and practical tasks, and to increase their awareness and understanding of the impact of chemistry on the success of the economy and society.

The Assessment

Chemistry is assessed by three external exams at the end of the two-year course. We have internal assessments at various points during the course to review learning.

Practical skills are assessed throughout the course and a Skills endorsement certificate is issued.

Skills / Employability

A Level Chemistry provides skills that are of use in many areas of employment.  Attention to detail, hazard and risk assessment and use of laboratory equipment are refined and developed.

Where could it take you?

An essential component of medical school applications. Chemistry underpins many health related and pharmaceutical industries.

A Level Chemistry is routinely required for progression onto numerous higher educational courses including: Chemical Engineering, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine and many more.

Course Requirements

GCSE grade 6 or above in science or chemistry

GCSE grade 5 in maths

Additional Information

The chemists will have the opportunity to undertake IRIS projects in conjunction with Benenden school.
